Information for San Clemente Athletes

The following is a list of information that is important to all athletes participating in Track & Field or Cross Country (Boys or Girls) at San Clemente High School. Please read carefully and if you have any questions please contact  your head coach.

Tryouts for Track & Field will begin the week of 1/22/08 - 1/25/08 and then again the first week of the spring semester, 2/4/08 - 2/8/08. Athletes must have all physical exam and athletic clearance paperwork turned in to the athletic director prior to trying out. The season officially begins on Monday February 11, 2008.

Athletic Clearance: All athletes must be cleared by the athletic director's office prior to the start of the season. This process includes completion of physical exam and insurance paperwork, as well as academic clearance. The forms for the physical exam and insurance can be obtained in the main office and the athletic director's office. Make sure you check the paperwork carefully for all areas requiring signatures before you turn it in. When you have completed all of the necessary paperwork, turn it in to the athletic director's office. All athletes must have the physical exam clearance by the end of the second week of the season in order to remain on the team.

Transportation Fee: CUSD requires that all athletes pay a $65.00 fee for busing to and from athletic contests. This fee can be waived under certain circumstances, for example if the student is eligible for or already enrolled in the school's free lunch program. If you have any questions about fee waivers, contact the Activities office or the Athletic Director's office.

Fundraising: Athletes involved in both Track and Cross Country are expected to assist in maintaining the Track & Field program through fundraising. Generally athletes will have two options; (1) Donate a requested amount (usually $60.00 for Track, $30.00 for Cross Country). (2) Participate in a fundraising activity. All athletes will also be required to work at our Invitational Track Meet in March, as this is our biggest fundraiser.

Uniforms: Athletes in both Track and Cross Country will be given the option of purchasing their team package, which includes uniform singlet and shorts, warm-ups, t-shirt and team gear bag, or they can apply extra money received through fundraising toward their team package. If the uniform is lost or damaged, the athlete will be required to purchase a new one. Athletes must provide their own training and racing shoes. These are your most important piece of gear, so do your homework before you buy shoes.

Track or Cross Country Class: Athletes should be signed up for 6th period Cross Country in the fall, or 6th period Track & Field in the spring. Occasionally athletes with scheduling conflicts or seniors not needing PE credit will be excused from enrolling in the class but still be allowed participate on the team. If you have a reason for not enrolling in the 6th period Track / Cross Country class, you must see the boys or girls head coach for approval. Keep in mind that Track and Cross Country are competitive athletic programs not PE classes. If you do not follow team rules, miss practice, consistently fail to complete workouts, or fail to make the competitive standards, you will be removed from the class / team, and transferred into a regular PE class.

San Clemente Track & Field Qualifying Standards
